14th June 2025
Capricorn duo was formed in 1979 when Robin Williams, a veteran of many Country music bands in Southern England advertised for someone to join him in a new duo; that someone was John Scott. In the mid-1980s the duo became a band but at a time when bands are finding it harder to get work as many clubs can only afford a soloist or a duo at best Capricorn have decided to retire at the end of this year after 46 years on the road. They have always been firm favourites at the Sands CMC in High Wycombe so it was good to see them playing at the club for one last time on 14th June.
Lead singer John Scott retired during covid and the last time I saw them at the club in 2022 Pat O’Dea was on lead guitar. He retired at the end of 2023 and during their last two years together they have been performing with either Ray Philips or Mark Jacobs, a former member of the band on lead. Tonight we had Ray Phillips on lead guitar and lead vocals joining Mike Loft on bass, Mike Wrixton who joined the band on 2012 on pedal steel and the very experienced Mike Pretty who joined the band on 1991 on drums and lead vocals. So we had three Mikes and a Ray.
Capricorn are unashamedly a traditional Country band smartly turned out with two good singers, good harmonies and top notch instrumentation and not a backing track to be heard. They kicked the evening off with Merle Haggard’s I Had a Beautiful Time, Bobby Bare’s The Streets Of Baltimore and Neal McCoy’s The City That Put The Country Back In Me which meant early on in the evening it was time for a barn dance. Clearly Capricorn still have a fan base and it was nice to see the club so full on a hot night and they had little trouble keeping the dance floor busy.
A few more songs that stood out in the first set included Gene Watson’s Dreams Of A Dreamer, Bob Wills’ Right Or Wrong, Connie Smith’s Once A Day, Tracy Byrd’s You Lied To Me, Marty Robbins’s After The Storm and George Strait’s Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind all classics in their day but perhaps some of them less often heard these days.
One thing I really liked about Capricorns performance tonight was that it took me back to the Country clubs I remember over 30 years ago. A band of course, more than one good singer and a whole heap of songs I remember from those days. It was really like going back in time for the evening and I enjoyed every minute of it and judging by the enthusiastic audience response I wasn’t the only one. They ended the set with The Everly Brothers’ Carol Jane and George Ducas’ Tricky Moon
Set 2 opened with another barn dance to Brooks & Dunn’s If That’s the Way You Want It followed by Willie Nelson’s Seven Spanish Angels and Jason Roberts’ Last Dime, Mike Pretty told us when he was growing up one of his favourite songs at the time was Gene Autry’s South Of The Border which took us back to 1939. Mike is an enthusiastic drummer with a long pedigree in music; he has always been fanatical about Country music. He started out as a singer but soon discovered his drumming ability, and for the princely sum of £25 he acquired his first drum kit. This led to the formation of Ricky Marshall and the Deputies around 1960 it had a Country-sounding name but was heavily influenced by Cliff and the Shadows. After a break from playing an informal jam session in 1979 led to the formation of the Cottonwood Country Band and for the next 12 years Mike was their drummer, until a chance meeting with John Scott in 1991 resulted in Mike joining Capricorn.
One of my favourite band from the old days is the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band; We certainly don’t hear enough of their music these days so Face On The Cutting Room Floor has to be one of my picks of the evening. On a hot evening it was good to hear a good helping of slow songs that kept the dancers on their feet, these included Tex Ritter’s Jealous Heart and Conway Twitty’s Its Only Make Believe. Capricorn brought the second set to a close with Rodney Crowell’s Give My Heart A Rest, Merle Haggard’s Old Fashioned Love and Jack Scott’s Burning Bridges a nice waltz.
Set three opened with Ricky Van Shelton’s Our Love and yet another Merle Haggard song Big City. It’s probably true to say you can’t have enough of Merle Haggard and Big City was a good opportunity for the two lead players Ray Philips and Mike Wrixton to demonstrate with competing but complimentary lead breaks.
After Chuck Berry’s Fraulein, Capricorn were joined on stage by guest singer and guitarist, our Sands host, Alan Maton. Tonight he brought his Taylor acoustic guitar out of retirement as this is the instrument Capricorn’s John Scott used to play. He remained on stage for the rest of the set kicking off with a couple from The Mavericks, There Goes My Heart and All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down.A few more songs that stood out in the final set included Alan Jackson’s A Little Bluer Than That, Emmylou Harris’ C’est La Vie and Don Williams’ You’re My Best Friend.
They closed the evening with yet another Merle Haggard’ Silver Wings and for an encore we heard Gene Watson’s Got No Reason For Goin’ Home which brought prolonged and enthusiastic applause. The dance floor remained full from start to finish confirming my view that music doesn’t have to be modern to satisfy dancers. With good food on offer during the first break, it is not surprising the Sands CMC is still doing well.

Richard Palmer
by Wendy Haylock
29th June 2025
Sadly Darren Knight has had to cancel all his gigs at the moment, and our thoughts are with Darren and his family at this sad time. Richard Palmer kindly stepped in to perform for us all, and it was his first time at Hickory Lake and what a fantastic evening he gave us all, such a great powerful voice which suited every song that he sang,he had several requests which he gladly fulfilled, and kept the dance floor busy all evening with line-dancers and freestylers alike, we had so much good feedback, and his interaction with his audience was great, we thank you Richard for an excellent evening of entertainment, and hope we can get you back again soon.
We had one Birthday which was Sue’s who’s Birthday it is today 30th. Richard sang Happy Birthday to her and we all wished her well. We had two first timers Chantale and Claire, it was nice to meet you both and hope you enjoyed your evening with us.
The raffle this week was taken care of by Dave and Sylve, we thank you Sylve for taking part you did a grand job, and we thank all who added prizes to the raffle table it’s much appreciated. Grateful thanks as always to all our brilliant team of Hickory Lake helpers, you all do a fantastic job in all that you each do for us, from the start of the evening until the end, and we thank Sandra for kindly stepping in and helping Pru in the canteen in the break in the absence of Jane. Thank you to all our wonderful supporters, we really appreciate the support you give to your club, and being such a warm evening it was so good to see you all. Wendy xx
Delta Dawn CMC, Tonbridge, Kent

Spread Your Wings with Dawn & Terry Coomber (centre)
by Nick Catford
20th June 2025
On the hottest day of the year it was nice to visit a club with good air conditioning – it really was good to get out of the blistering heat for Spread Your Wings first visit to the Delta Dawn CMC in Tonbridge. For me they have everything going for them. Vicki-Anne Boardman is an excellent singer with a powerful voice and a bubbly personality. Neil Woodward sings good harmony vocals but his strength is as a musician. He plays a mean lead guitar exceedingly well with plenty of complex lead breaks on many songs. Neil is also the spokesman for the duo. I was entertained from start to finish.
Vicki and Neil opened the evening with Susan Ashton’s Closer followed by Toby Keith’s Last Living Cowboy. We don’t hear enough Toby Keith in my view, one of the best new Country singers to emerge in recent times and sadly taken far too young in 2024. Their programme tonight was generally quite contemporary but included a few classics like Hank Williams’ Your Cheatin’ Heart which Neil pointed out “was recorded in 1953, a year most people in the club wouldn’t remember”. I was almost 1 when it was released but I don’t remember Uncle Mac (Derek McCulloch) every playing it on the wireless. Does anyone reading this remember Uncle Mac??!!
Next we heard Mark Wills’ Places I’ve Never Been, Josh Mirenda’s Til The Neon’s Gone and Pam Tillis’ Blue Rose Is. It’s always nice to see a female singer as we usually get a good selection of good girl’s songs which are often avoided by male singers, Tonight these included two beautiful ballads from Brandy Clark, What’ll Keep Me Out Of Heaven which Neil described as having lyrics about strangers cheating on their partners – what else might you expect from a County song? This was followed by Deana Carter’s Strawberry Wine which kept everyone on the dance floor and brought a superb first set to a close.
It was good to see a change of outfit each set with set 2 opening with Carlene Carter’s Every Little Thing followed by the first of several Luke Combs songs, Honky Tonk Highway. On a hot night a good selection of slower songs kept people on the dance floor. These included Willie Nelson’s Always On My Mind which Neil told us was first released by Brenda Lee. I didn’t know that so I checked and he was right! Next we heard Rodney Atkin’s If You’re Going Through Hell which Neil dedicated to the M25 which he knew in advance was going to hold him up on his way back to Nottingham that night!
Neil doesn’t usually do instrumentals but tonight he played (Ghost) Riders In The Sky especially for Nathan. Vicki left the stage for a few minutes while Neil played this 1948 classic from Stan Jones and his Death Valley Rangers. There was plenty of applause as Vicki returned to the stage. Keith Urban’s Somebody Like You meant it was time for a barn dance which was followed by another bum grabber Chris LeDoux’s Tougher Than the Rest. Drake Jensen’s Wherever Love Takes Us and Montgomery Gentry’s Hillbilly Shoes brought the second set to a close
Gretchen Wilson’s Redneck Woman opened the third set followed by Luke Combs, Brooks & Dunn’s 1, 2 Many. Lonestar’s Amazed is another beautiful ballad that coaxed most people out of their seats and onto the dance floor. A few more that I liked in the third set included Ashley McBryde’s Martha Divine, Pat Green’s Wave On Wave and Keith Whitley’s When You Say Nothing at All and Big & Rich’s Kick My Ass which meant it was time for another barn dance.
All too soon it was time to finish and Vicki took us out with what she described as one of her favourite Country songs, Cody Johnson’s ‘Til You Can’t and for their encore another old classic, John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads.
I still find it difficult to believe that Vicki has only been singing for a few years and that before that she didn’t know she could sing. Her parents used to go to Country clubs so she was brought up on Country music. She first sung a song especially for her father who was very proud of her when she realised she was such a good singer. She told me that she’s a very shy person which I also find difficult to believe on tonight’s performance.
Vicki and Neil certainly did us proud tonight with loud and well deserved applause and a guarantee of a return booking at Delta Dawn CMC next year.

Country Revival CMC, Dagenham, Kent

Johnny Holland
by Nick Catford
1st June 2025
Johnny Holland has been a regular visitor to Country Revival CMC in Dagenham and has always been well received with a good mix of Country classics and newer songs; he always includes some useful line dance suggestions. He was smartly turned out and believes that image is a very important aspect of his performance. He has a rich voice with a Brummie accent and a good vocal range with plenty of friendly banter and quickly made friends with the knowledgeable audience at the club, opening proceedings with Midland’s Runnin’ Wild and Troy Cassar-Daley’s Things I Carry Around.
Johnny lists his Country influences as artists like Hal Ketchum, Travis Tritt, Alan Jackson and Toby Keith and we got songs from all of them tonight and not always the songs that you regularly hear. Early in the evening he sung Alan Jackson’s It Must Be Love.
He learnt to play guitar while still at school and, when he left at 16, he fronted a number of 60’s/70s cover bands as a singer and guitarist. It wasn’t until c2002 that he developed a love of Country music and he told me in one of the breaks that playing in Country clubs is a much better environment than the kinds of venues he used to play. He feels a Country audience is a lot more attentive and appreciative of the music. After a lifetime in the limelight he still enjoys singing and playing and has no thoughts of retiring any time soon.
A few more songs that stood out for me in the first set included George Strait’s Stars On The Water, Brooks & Dunn’s Neon Moon, Mark Chesnutt’s Woman, Sensuous Woman. Next came a couple from Hal Ketchum, Small Town Saturday Night followed by Invisible, a nice slow song we don’t often hear, tonight it was a request. It was a hot night and slower songs tended to get more people onto the dance floor.
For me a good all round Country soloist is someone with a good voice, a nice personality and a musician who can play well. I have seen Johnny once before so I knew we were going to get plenty of intricate guitar solos which the audience always appreciate with applause and cheering.
Set 2 opened with Tracy Byrd’s Heaven In My Woman’s Eyes, Lee Roy Parnell’s We All Get Lucky Sometimes and more Hal Ketchum with Loving You Makes Me a Better Man. Next came Reba McEntire and Brooks and Dunn’s Cowgirls Don’t Cry, then Toby Keith’s A Little Less Talk And A Lot More Action and Darryl Worley’s Messed Up In Memphis with included a great guitar solo.
The club always likes a barn dance and Johnny gave us three in a row, John Prine’s Same Thing Happened to Me, Alan Jackson’s Gonna Come Back As A Country Song and Marty Stuart’s Tempted, next we than had another Alan Jackson song I haven’t hear for years, It’s Alright To Be A Redneck.
Johnny was always on the move around the stage and always with a smile, he was clearly having a good time and that rubbed off on everyone. A singer who is enjoying himself makes us all feel good. Set 3 opened with The Eagles’ Take It Easy, William Michael Morgan’s Missing and The Lennerockers’ High Class Lady. The set included Blake Shelton’s Ready To Roll and Dwight Yoakam’s Fast As You which included another long and complex guitar solo at the end.
As the evening wound down a few more that stood out included Darryl Worley’s Honky Tonk Life, Merle Haggard’s Today I Started Loving You Again and Rodney Atkins’ If You’re Going Through Hell. Johnny finished a very enjoyable evening with Little Texas’ God Bless Texas which brought warm and very well deserved applause. I really enjoyed the evening and I am sure everyone else did as well. I look forward to seeing Johnny Holland again at some time in the future; a good all round Country entertainer in line dance and western clubs.
